belstone pictures was started to in 2012 by Finn Cardigan Bruce

 

It is based in London

 

Belstone does not own any other studios

 

The CEO of Belstone pictures is Finn Cardigan Bruce (an old Hurtwood House student)

 

Not having any other studios means that they have only one form of revenue and can’t get funding from their other studios like Disney can.

 

Belstone was set up in 2012 (been running for almost 10 years)

 

Belstone has only released 3 movies, so their top 3 biggest hits are:

1. tank 432 – 2015

2. making tracks - 2018

3. tucked – 2018

 

The budget for tucked was $50,000, this is very different to Disney’s budgets which shows how different the large and small institutions are.

 

Due to their small budget they have to use non-well-known actors to keep their above the line costs low. If one of their actors becomes big, they are not likely to use that actor for another film.

Advantages of Belstone being a small institution:

-   has no reputation

1. if they make a bad film, they won’t get a massive backlash from fans and others

2. they can end up surprising audiences (if it is a small studio then the audiences have no expectation to go off so if the movie is good the audience can be surprised)

-   teaming up with other companies allows them, if they have a bad loss (budget is more than the profit), to have less of the loss (money is split between the companies)

With the marvel movies they work with the same actors for the movies as the actor plays the one character and so if they want that character to be in the movie the actor will be used.

 

The director for the marvel movies is Kevin feige and he is the director to most of the marvel movies

 Genre

Genre is a way of containing/ categorising a media product, for example a film, by what it contains. The contents are shot lengths, shot types, sound, editing, etc.

 

Genre is used by how the studio makes the films. It is also used in the things that the studio puts in the media product. The different types of camera shots, editing and sounds used can create different genres.

 

genre is used because it can help both the audience and the institutions:

-   The institutions: it helps them to identify their audience as they know different kinds of people like to watch different types of genres

-   The institutions: it helps them with making the film as well as sell the film as they know how many people like the different genres and know how much money they could make.

-   The audience: it helps with what they are going to expect

-   The audience: it helps them to identify what they like/ enjoy

 

Sub-genre – it is when there is a category inside a category. Examples of this would be the different categories of horror (e.g., slasher horror, psychological horror, supernatural horror, etc

This is an example of a slasher horror. It is called the The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. It is about 5 friends going to visit one of their grandfathers graves when they stumble upon an abandoned house. Or so they thought. Someone armed with a chainsaw ends up finding them and killing them.

This is an example of a phycological horror. It is called Ma. The movie is about a woman who befriends a group of teenagers. She allows them to host parties in her basement in her house. Just when they think live couldn't get any better things start to happen that makes the teenagers question who their host really is. 

This is an example of a supernatural horror. It is called the conjuring. IT is about two supernatural investigators who help a family find the dark spirit in the house. It ends up with people getting possessed and other abnormal things happening.

-   Why sub-genres exist - Making the genre even more focused helps the audience expect what is going to happen as well as focus in on what they like

-   The benefits of sub-genre:

1. Helps to focus on a specific idea or theme

2. Allows names for franchises to be made

3. Allows ideas to be explored

 

Hybrid genre – where two or more main genres are used. Examples of hybrid genres would be movies that use both action, thriller and comedy. Examples of hybrid genre movies and tv shows are colossal (2017), the twilight films and Dr Who.

This is an example of a hybrid genre movie. It is called colossal. It is an action, adventure and comedy film. it is about a party girl who is out of work moves back to her home town. At the same time a monster starts attacking Seoul. She comes to the realisation that she is connected to the monster.

This is an example of a hybrid genre tv show. It is called Doctor who. It is a drama, sci-fi and adventure tv show. It is about an alien who appears to be human who travels in time exploring the world. 

This is an example of a hybrid genre movie. It is called The Twilight saga: new moon. It is an adventure, drama and fantasy film. It is about vampires and werewolves and in the movie one character leaves after one character nearly lost her live after a fight. After the leaving one character falls into a depression which makes her start a relationship with another guy.

-   Why hybrid genres exist – reach wider audiences to have an advantage to earn more profit

-   The benefits of hybrid genre:

1. Reaches a wider audience

2. Ending is unclear

3. Has elements that many different people like

4. Likely to do better than a movie with only one genre

 

Things that I associate with genre:

-   Character – in different genres you can assume that at least one character will be linked to that genre (e.g., in It, Penny-wise is a scary clown who makes the movie be scary making it a horror)

-   Storyline – in movies you would assume that the storyline would fit in with the type of genre used in the movie. (e.g., in fast and furious which is an action film there is lots of action going on in the storyline)

-   Emotions – in a movie you would assume that the emotions that you would get would correlate to the type of genre used in the movie (e.g., in La La Land you feel feelings of sadness and happiness due to the romance)

-   Stereotypes – in a movie you would assume some stereotypes in that movie that are used on the movie related to that specific genre (e.g., in Star Wars which is in the genre of sci-fi you would expect to see things that are not on earth or not achievable due to the genre used)
