comparing title sequences

 Comparing title sequences

I will be comparing the title sequences of Greece and American Horror Story season 1

Greece opening title sequence

American Horror Story season one opening title sequence

The genres of the films are shown by the opening title sequences in many ways. The first opening title sequence I will talk about is grease's opening title sequence. The elements that showed/ conveyed the genre is the sound used throughout the scene. The high energy non-diegetic soundtrack used in the opening credit sequence. Another way in which the genre is connoted is through the comedic elements given through the positioning. The music of the opening title sequence references the title, “Grease”.

The genre of American horror story is shown. through the opening title sequence in many ways. The genre is shown by the iconic horror imagery. These include the skulls, blood, old photos, etc. These shows can connote a genre of horror to the audience. The use of the fast-paced editing can also connote a genre of horror. It helps to bring confusion which adds a sense of mystery to the opening scene and series. The font used in the opening title sequence connotes a genre of horror. The font is gothic and overwhelming which can connote a genre of horror.

In the opening title sequence to grease I have picked out some of the key titles for the filmmaking. The titles I have chosen are of the director, the DOP (Director Of Photography) and the editor. The titles are more adapted to a happier and more positive genre. The bright colours used connotes happiness and positivity.

In comparison in the opening title sequence to American horror story we just see names without being told what those people do for the filmmaking. The titles are way more adapted to the genre of horror and the lack of what the people do connotes mystery in the opening title sequence.

The tone for grease is set in the opening title sequence. The tone is set through the use of the lighthearted characters. The tones of the opening title sequence are positive tones that bring positive emotions to the audience.

The tone for American horror story is set in the opening title sequence. The tone is set through the use of the non-diegetic soundtrack which creates tones of darkness and violence. The key iconic horror imagery of skulls, blood and old children connotes tones of darkness and violence. The use of the abstract imagery connotes tones of mystery and the unknown. The font is overwhelming and gothic.

I will first talk about the opening title sequence of Grease. The time that this movie is set in can be suggested as being in the 50s. This can be conveyed by the costume of the character which is the style of clothing that was worn during the 50s. The cars in the opening title sequence are the models of cars that were popular during the 50s. The key moments of 50s history put into the opening title sequence of grease can suggest that the movie is going on at the same time as these events which means it is going on in the 50s.

I will first talk about the opening title sequence of American horror story. The time that this movie is set in can be suggested both modern time and the past. The both modern items as well as the past items can connote being set in both the past and the present times. It can be assumed that we might switch between the past and the present over the series.

The location that grease can be connoted as being in is America this is shown through the iconic American history shown in the opening title sequence. The location can also be guessed as being in a high school. We can guess this due to the ending of the opening title sequence being at a highschool and it is where it changes from cartoon to real life.

The location of the American horror story can be connected as being in America. This is connoted from the title being American horror story. The episodes can be suggested as being set in a basement. This is from the whole of the opening title sequence being set in the basement. The location can be implied as being set in a haunted house's basement. The old pictures, skulls, jars and other creepy object imply the house as being haunted.

There are hints to the narrative inside the opening title sequence to Grease. There are hints to there being a romance inside the narrative and can be guessed as being between the first two characters we meet. The gangs that we see in the opening title sequence can suggest friendship being shown in the narrative. The props and the bedroom settings can connote the characters are being teenagers. The police cars, leather jackets and the behaviour can imply and suggest rebellion. It can be suggested as being not the simplest film. There could be scenes of the characters finding themselves.

There are hints to the narrative inside the opening title sequence to American horror story. It can be suggested that we will look into history due to the old pictures and other old objects. It can also be implied as from the POV shots we will see the story at some point through the eyes of the killer or the prey. The gothic font can connote the narrative as being a gothic narrative. The abstract images and soundtrack can suggest the narrative will be an abstract narrative.

The two main characters that we meet are Danny and Sandy

Danny is introduced in the opening title sequence in lots of different ways. Danny's room is messy which can suggest that he is a laid back person. The (actor) as (character) adds to the theatrical (musical) theme. The use of in the opening title sequence Danny is introduced by himself can suggest he will be the leader of the "gang". He is a 'greaser' which can connote a biker gang. He can be implied as being a popular person.

Sandy is introduced in the opening title sequence in lots of different ways. Sandy is the binary opposite to Danny. The fairytail aspects presented in the opening title sequence can shows her beauty and naiveness. The animated animals helping Sandy get ready can connote her being like a Disney princess. This can imply her being a very nice and kind person who isn't mean to anyone. The (actor) as (character) adds to the theatrical (musical) theme.

In the opening title sequence to American horror story we can assume that we will see a villain inside of the episodes. Through the old photos and other creepy things it can be suggested as there being a supernatural being expressed throughout the episodes. It can be connoted that we will see victims and prey from the past and present. The scissor person as well as the dress that can suggest an innocent stereotypical victim can be implied as being seen in the episodes.

I believe that Grease is more successful in their opening title sequence. I believe the opening title sequence to American horror story is successful but grease has done it better. The positive emotions presented and expressed in the opening title sequence are infectious and get the audience to be happy and can get them to want to carry on the movie. However the creepy and lightly scary opening title sequence with the eerie musical can make people scared which can make them not want to watch the rest of the episodes. The cartoon opening title sequence is appealing to lots of different aged people whereas the abstract images shown in the opening title sequence to American horror story is fixed to an age range.
