In the lesson on Thursday we took away the shots of Daisy running between trees and edited it to her at the hiding to the tree she hides behind from Mike. We edited those bits out as we thought it too much time and wasn't interesting. We also thought that it didn't give much to the scene and we didn't need it. The edited version is just as good than the edited version with the taken out shots. Maybe even better.
We used the shot of the camera panning from Mike walking across a tree to show daisy hiding and making the weapon (putting the rocks in the sock). Showing how close the hunter is to seeing the girl shows the danger she is in. This helps to build tension and suspense in the sequence.
Another shot that builds tension and suspense is when we edited the hunter to look at the tree Daisy is behind and her have to quickly hide behind the tree. How we edited these shots together helps to build the suspense in the sequence.
On Thursday when only me and Daisy (the one in our group not the actress) were there we got the audio from the built in microphone and the directional microphone and picked which one of them was best then deleted the one we didn't like. We copied the one we liked and placed it where the audio we didn't like was originally placed. We then added constant power and constant to transition from one audio to the other so it didn't sound weird as the shots didn't all sound the same.
In free time I worked on the audio that we couldn't find on the day or audio that we filmed that needed to be improved.
audio I added/ enhanced:
I added a gun shot to the sequence - as we couldn't actually shoot a gun in the sequence and we also couldn't record us shooting a gun I had to find gun shot audio in the library of sounds on the computer. I added these as we needed to hear a gun shot so we know why Zaza fell to the ground in the sequence.
I added a knife cut to the edit - As when Zaza was getting killed it was very quiet we had to add a sound of a knife cutting so it sounded like Zaza's throat was being slit. We might not have had to add this is Zaza made a loud scream/ noise but as she didn't we had to fill in the silence which made it feel off.
I added footsteps of walking in a forest to the sequence - in the sequence you can hear the hunters walking but i added foot step sounds of someone walking in the forest to enhance the footstep which also gets the audience to focus on them as it helps to build tension.
I added thuds to when the hunter was being hit by the weapon and the gun butt - As the weapon didn't have real rocks in it it didn't make a noise when Mike's head was hit with it. In real life if they were real rocks it would have made a noise. To make it feel more real i added in thuds for when he is hit to make the weapon sound more real. I changed the thuds from the hitting Mike with the weapon to hitting him with the end of the gun. I added a heavy sounding thud for the gun end hitting Mike.
I made the breathing of Daisy when we first meet her louder so that the Audience focuses on her breathing so that we can tell how she is feeling/ her emotions in the situation she is in. The breathing helps to emphasise her emotions in the scene.
I changed the volume of the sounds to make them sound more realistic
problems in the audio was that sometimes the audio was too loud so we would have to adjust it so that it wasn't so loud. Sometimes the audio was too quiet so we would have to adjust the audio to be louder so you could hear it.
The fast cuts between shots is a convention of an action movie which are sequence's genre is action thriller. Our target audience being people who like actions and thrillers would enjoy the sequence as it has lots of conventions of action thrillers.
the conventions:
- it was action filled (convention of an action)
- it had weapons in it [the gun and the knives] (convention of actions and thrillers)
- it had fights in it (conventions of actions and thrillers)
- it contained a cat and mouse chase (conventions of a thriller)
- there was lots of tension and suspense (conventions of a thriller)
- the sequence contained a murder (conventions of a thriller)
suspense in a film/ tv show/ sequence can make it very gripping and make the audience want to carry on watching so they can find out what happens. In our sequence there is lots of tension which helps to keep the sequence entertaining for the audience.
we spent Fridays lesson working on naming and putting the titles into the sequence
the titles we picked:
- the title of the movie
- the director
- the money/ finance for the movie
- the studio
we used pre-made templates of the titles in a title sequence to create out titles. We picked the colour of the titles to be yellow as it looks really cool and it can connote happiness. This it opposed in the sequence as there is no positive things happening.
The title of the film is:
"This is the day"
We edited so that the title comes on word by word rather than all at once. This makes the title more dramatic and cooler.
On Thursdays lesson we added one little soundtrack to the start of the sequence where Zaza is being chased by the hunters. On Friday's lesson we composed a soundtrack for our sequence. Cole made the soundtrack while we carried on editing the sounds and the titles for our sequence. On Mondays lesson we put the sound track onto the sequence and found out that it didn't fit the theme/ tone that we wanted for the sequence. It was too calm. We spent the activities on Monday adding another soundtrack onto the sequence. We originally had 2 soundtracks but we ended up making the second soundtrack be played throughout the whole sequence. Having one continuous soundtrack sound much better and make the sequence much better because the two soundtracks clashed and made the tone of the sequence be really confusing. We chose the soundtrack as it fit the tone of the sequence very well and helped to improve the sequence and make it even better than it originally was. We changed the volume of the soundtrack at certain points to make sound effects and sounds more impactful and the soundtrack would have taken the focus away. the drums at the end of the soundtrack hits when the hunters head gets hit for the last time which stops the soundtrack where there is no soundtrack again in the rest of the sequence. The drums emphasise the whack from the weapon.
I think that our final opening sequence looks very good. Even though we have some things that we are not a super fan of and things that we can improve i still think that the final result is much better than i thought i would be able to produce.
One thing that we could have improved is the shot of when Zaza gets her throat slit. In that shot we were only able to do once because of the fake blood when the hunter brings the knife across her neck the knife can clearly be seen bending. I think that we should have done that shot like the real shot but without the fake blood recorded it and then watched the footage back on the day (even though its a rule that you don't do that) so that we could find any problems that happened, like the knife bending, and fix the problem for when we record with the fake blood.
All the actors were very good at acting which helped the sequence to look really good. if you have a bad actor in the sequence it can end up making the sequence look bad and not professional. just one person can bring the whole sequence down. The fact that all of our actors acting really well made the sequence look really good and give the right tones.
Just over a week after we filmed our opening sequence we got to start the editing of our opening sequence. As i was the editor/ the main editor i edited the most. the only time i wasn't editing was the few times i wasn't there are at least one of the members of the group was at the computer.
On the Monday of our 1 week of editing we spent the lesson looking through all of our footage. We labeled the footage we liked and didn't name the footage we didn't want to use. We created 5 bins are moved the footage into the bin they were meant to be in.
the bins we had were:
Zaza (girl 1) - where were put all of girl 1's shots
Daisy (girl 2) - where we put all of Daisy's shots
Stuart (hunter 2) - where we put all of Stuarts' shots
Mike (hunter 1) - where we put all of Mike's shots
girl 3 - where we put all of girl 3's shots
We then came back the next day in our lesson and started to edit the footage (just the picture bit of it) and put it into the order we wanted to so that we could create the story we wanted and also build tension in the sequence. We spent 2 lesson and free time editing the video side of the sequence.
When were looking through the footage and got to the one shot we had of Mike killing Zaza we realised that he put a little too much force on the knife so it can clearly be seen bending which can break the atmosphere of the sequence slightly. We did not take anymore shots of the killing of Zaza so we had to keep this shot in the scene.
in shots that go after each other the continuity was sometimes messed up due to the hunters holding the shotgun the other way to which they were holding it in the previous shot. To fix it we had to edit it in a way to make it look like they were able to switch the gun in their hands without it just suddenly changing hands.
we chose to take out the shot of Stuart walking out of the starts of our sequence as we thought that it didn't really work as being the opening shot of the sequence. It instead starts straight into the action of Zaza running away from the hunters and getting shot and killed. the shot of Stuart walking though the forest is too peaceful where were want our sequence to open up on a hectic and action filled shot. We chose to not add this shot in the sequence as the only place it would fit is at the start and we don't want it there so were just didn't include it.
We filmed a shot were we panned across the trees then tilted down to look at the girl running where we panned to follow her running. This shot suggested at the start a calm forest but after tilting down we see that the forest is chaotic. We didn't end up using this shot as we didn't like how the pan to tilt to pan looked. We thought it made the shot look really bad. If we used this it could have made the sequence look bad. We would have used this at the start of the sequence but Zaza running in a different shot is a better than this shot.
can you tell me about the mise-en-scene in your opening sequence
me 2:
yes, but it will have to be quick
me 1:
thank you thank you
me 2:
so, what do you want know
me 1:
what is Mise-en-scene first of all
me 2:
mise-en-scene is where characters and objects are places in a scene. It is everything in font of the camera. examples of this are: costumes, props, lighting, hair, make-up, character positioning, facial expression, colour.
me 1:
Can you tell me about the costumes that you picked for the actors to wear
me 2:
sure,
For the main girl we had her wearing a blue jumpsuit as jumpsuits are a way to take people's uniqueness and the hunters would have done this as they don't care about the human lives they are taking away. They just dehumanise the girls by putting them in jumpsuits.
The blue colour was used as it can connote security, peace, passiveness and predictability. The girl breaks these connotations by opposing the predictability of the girl being killed by the hunters. She opposes the passiveness and peace with the violence she has.
We put her in a red t-shirt as red connotes strength, danger, aggression and courage. In the opening sequence she shows all of these attributes.
For the second girl we had her wearing a blue jumpsuit as jumpsuits are a way to take people's uniqueness and the hunters would have done this as they don't care about the human lives they are taking away. They just dehumanise the girls by putting them in jumpsuits.
The blue colour was used as it can connote security, peace, passiveness and predictability. In the sequence she follows these attributes apart from the security as she is killed.
We put her in a white t-shirt as white connotes innocence and hope. There is hope for the girl as we hope that she could have survived but mostly the hope is lost when she is killed. The innocence can be implied as we aren't supposed to think that the girls have done anything wrong to get to be hunted by the hunters.
the dirt on the jumpsuits can show how the girls have been hunted for some time
me 1:
and what about the hunters costumes
me 2:
yes i was just about to talk about them
For hunter 1 he was wearing a jacket that contained 3 different colours in it; green, brown and red. The brown and the green are the more dominant colours. The colour brown connotes predictability which is opposed when the girl kills the hunter instead of him killing her. The colour green connotes safety, health and luck. all 3 of these attributes are opposed when he is unlikely as he lost his health/ life when he had a lack of safety. The red colour connotes the danger he is in as well as his aggressiveness.
the colour of the hunters tie is blue and yellow. The colour yellow connotes caution, positivity and interlect. these are opposed when the hunter is not intelligent enough to know he shouldn't have ever tried to hunt her. also the yellow can connote the caution you should have of the hunter as he is dangerous.
The blue connotes security, peace, passiveness and predictability. This is all opposed when the hunter is killed instead of the girl which break the predictability and the hunter loses his security and there is a lack of peace. The shirt is also blue which emphasises the attributes connoted by the blue colour.
for hunter 2 he was wearing a jacket that contained 2 colours in it: green and blue. The green connotes safety, health and luck which aren't opposed like the other hunter as this hunter is lucky to not get killed by the girl. The blue colour can connote security which is shown when he isn't the hunter to get killed so he is secure.
We didn't put him in a tie as we thought he didn't more connotations as the main character. We put him in a white shirt as the colour white can connote innocence and goodness. This is opposed in the sequence as the hunter is not good, he is killing innocent girl
me 1:
why did you pick to film in the forest
me 2:
the lighting that you get during the day is a dim and slightly dark lighting. This lighting fits in with our theme which was a dark theme of hunters killing innocent girls for sport.
The forest is an isolated location which if the sequence was real would be a good place to do it as its likely that nobody would know what you are doing.
me 1:
can you tell me about the make-up and hair you used for the characters
me 2:
we made the hair and the make-up of the girls be messed up to show that they had been hunted for a while before we see the events of the opening sequence.
The use of the make-up can get the audience to think about what were the girls doing before they were hunted by the hunters
we put blood on girl 1 to show that she couldn't survive and had already been hurt before being killed
we didn't put blood on girl 2 to show that she was very capable and is able to survive even being hunted
We made the girls faces, especially girl 1, slightly muddy to make it look like the girls had been there a while before we see them in the opening sequence
me 1:
why did you decide on the props you used for the opening sequence
me 2:
we gave the girls dog tags to show the hunters have done something so they can count how many people they have killed. This adds to the hunters ruthless character and hoe they dehumanise the girls
we decided on the black knife for 2 reasons. the first reason is because the colour black can connote power and protection. When the hunter has the knife he is powerful as he is able to kill the first girl. a knife is an object that you can use for protection. The other reason is that if the knife is black they it look will look more realistic with the closer up shots when the hunters kill the girl
we picked the hunters having a shot gun to connote the power the wielder of the shotgun has. When the hunters have the shotgun they have power as they can kill the first girl as they shot gun in the leg. when the second girl takes the shotgun off the hunter she end up gaining the power over the hunter where she then kills him.
we picked the weapon that the girl knocks down the hunter with to be a sock filled with rocks as it shows her survivability and intelligence. The fact that she is smart to make a weapon with what she has available in the forest shows her survivability and intelligence. The sock being white wasn't not thought about. The colour white can connote hope and goodness. This emphasises the hope we have for the girl to survive and get out of the forest. It also emphasises her being the good guy
we made sure that none of the actors, especially the hunters, had their phones in their pockets as if it was happening in real life they wouldn't want to be tracked because of the things they are doing so they wouldn't have taken their phones
me 1:
can you please tell me why you picked the certain facial expressions and character positioning
me 2:
when we used the pan across the tree from the hunter to the girl it shows how dangerous the situation she is in is
when she is looking down on the camera and when she is killing the hunter she is above him which shows she has the power over him. This is also done when the hunters kill the first girl they are above the girl
the expression on the first hunters face when he kills the girl is of happiness and pride. This shows that he has a ruthless personality and doesn't care that he is killing innocent humans
also on the actress we picked for the main girl is stereotypically thought as being the dumb blonde of the movie but she opposed these stereotypes where is is intelligent and able to fend for herself
me 1:
what were the genre conventions in your sequence that made it an action thriller
me 2:
the opening sequence was action filled which is one of the conventions of being an action movie. examples of the action are the two killings that we see in the same scene.
The weapons that we made in the sequence are conventions of both thrillers and action so it was good for the genre being an action thriller
a cat and mouse chase is a convention of a thriller. In the sequence a cat and mouse chase was seen between the girls and the hunters.\
The use of fights are part of both the conventions of thrillers and actions
Thrillers contain lots of tension and suspense. In the sequence there is tension and suspense being constantly built. the audience is in suspense weather or not the girl will be able to kill the hunter
the low key lighting from the forests leaves blocking out some of the sunlight fits into the conventions of thriller
the murder's we see in the sequence are conventions of thrillers
me 1:
why is your sequence rated as a 15
me 2:
our sequence is rated as a 15 as there is violence and unsafe things done in the sequence which are not advised for people under 15 to see as they could try and do what they see. The violence and language isn't bad enough to rate it higher than a 15 though
our target audience is both males and females as it shows parts that both males and females would enjoy watching
me 1:
how is the mise-en-scene used to suggest things about the characters
me 2:
as i have said before colours can be used to connote different attributes of the characters
the character positioning of the person over the other having more power is used
the use of the sock as the weapon can show the main girls capability
me 1:
what have you included in your sequence to give hints to the rest of the narrative
me 2:
The fact that we know there is at leats another hunter it can be suggested that the girl will go and kill the other hunter
other hint to the narrative is that we don't see how she got to be killed so it can be suggested that we will see how she got to be hunted in the first place in the rest of the movie
me 1:
how have you used the mise-en-scene to create tension
me 2:
as i have said before using the pan from the hunter to the tree to the main girl in the same shot helps to build tension as the audience will be thinking is the hunter going to find the girl
the fact that she is putting rocks into a rock can build tension as the sound could attract the hunter to her position

The genre of the film is an Adventure, Mystery, Thriller. The stars of the movie are Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason. The storyline of the movie is about a man on the run from spies as he has been mistaken as a different person. On his journeys he meets a woman and falls in love.
I watched the opening sequence to the movie and reviewed it on some aspects:
how does it link to genre, theme and mood of the film
The title sequence linked to the genre of adventure/ mystery/ thriller with the use of its non-diegetic soundtrack which gives off a mysterious/ adventure tone/ theme to the title sequence. Non-diegetic sound can help emphasise a point and in this example it helps to adds to the mysterious tone while also bringing a slight vibe of an adventure movie theme.
The fact that we don't know who is the main character in the title sequence can add to the mystery tone/ mood of the film. Not seeing/ knowing the main character in the opening sequence can add a mystery to the character as well as the movie as a whole. The audience to try and guess if any of the characters they see are the main character.
what narrative clues are we given
The showing of the building and the busy street can suggest/ connote that the film will be based in that city and focus around the building/ The building is an important part of the movie (is significant). Showing/ focusing on an object or a person connotes them/ it having significance to the narrative of the movie or just the scene. Having it in the opening sequence add more significance to the building which suggest that the building will have a big significance to the movie.
The showing of the man and woman at the end of the title sequence after all the titles can suggest to us that they will be the main characters in the narrative. Putting something at the end of an opening sequence makes it more impactful as it is the freshest thing in the audiences mind. Doing this makes the couple seem significant. This can connote the movie following this couple/ one of the people.
The use of the non-diegetic sound track being mysterious suggest that the movie will have senses of mystery it in and will follow a mysterious storyline. The non-diegetic sound track also has a slight sense of an adventure movie theme. This can imply that the movie will be following the adventure that the main character(s) is/ are taking.
why do you think it works so well
The title sequence is a simplistic title sequence. Having a simplistic title sequence make the sequence more impactful. A detailed opening sequence can end up being too detailed and the audience can sometimes get confused by all the information that is given to them. Also if the title sequence is too detailed it can end up spoiling the narrative to the movie. Making the sequence simplistic has allowed the audience watching the sequence to not be confused by whats going on. It has also given them enough information to keep them interested/ engaged.
The use of the non-diegetic sound track being composed so well helps the sequence stay engaging and entertaining. The soundtrack is a very interesting soundtrack which keeps the audience engaged to the sequence and can raise emotions for the rest of the movie. After all first impressions are very important. The opening sequence is the first impressions of the movie to audiences.
any films that may have been influenced by this style
What any films influenced from this title sequence would have taken away is the very effective simplistic nature of the opening title sequence. The film you would need to find is films that have simplistic opening title sequence with some other feature is will talk about. The title shown on the opening title sequence followed the simplistic vibe of the rest of the sequence. Filmmakers would have taken the simplistic titles as influence for their movie. A good example of movies that i think were influenced were the James Bond movie. These movie were released after "north by north west" was released which means they definitely had the chance of being influenced by the title sequence
I focused on the titles in the opening sequence and focused on these points
font
The font of the titles used in the opening sequence are simplistic which helps add to the simplistic theme and tone that the opening sequence is trying to get across. The simplistic titles help to keep the opening sequence from not being too confusing. This cause end up putting some of the audience from the movie if they think it's too confusing.
colour
The colour of all the titles was white. white is a colour which can connote goodness, purity and peace. This can be used to suggest/ connote that the main character(s) will be good people who have pure hearts and are innocent. This innocence suggestions can add to the the mysterious theme of the movie. The audience can be thinking is he innocent to the crimes that he might get caught for. The goodness suggestions can hint that the movie will be a lighthearted film which will have little to no violence and be a positive movie.
size
The size of the titles is either big or small, the size of the font is always changing. The size of the titles are used depending on what is happening in that part of the scene. In part of the film where there is action going on the titles are smaller compared to when the action is not going on in parts of the scene. The size of the titles are still big enough to have significance in the scene.
transitions
The transitions in the opening sequence are very simplistic which helps to add to the simplistic tone/ theme that I think the Bass' were going for. The simplistic transitions are cuts. The simplicity can help audiences not be distracted away from what is going on in the scene.
