shoot day reflection

this is a post on a reflection on our shoot day

preparations done before the shoot day (the night before)

  • Bea made 4 different forms of the weapon - 2 weapons with blood on them 2 weapons without them (the blood/ dirt had to be put on the night before so it could dry in time but also not be left too late that the fake blood would start to look weird) - 1 of each of the types of socks were fake [fake rock] and the other 1 of each types of the socks was real [real rocks]
  • Bea and Cole made some fake blood/ both edible and non edible
  • I printed out the shot list we made
  • I printed out the call sheet we made
  • I printed out the shooting schedule we made
  • I printed out posters that we put around the part of the forest we were filming in so that the public would know what was happening
  • I created stencils in the chance of us wanting to stray paint the costumes
  • We emailed the cast the night before reminding them of anything they needed to bring and what time we needed them for
  • Our group got snacks, water bottles, flasks (for hot drinks), hot water bottles, etc - to keep out cast warm, not thirsty and not hungry
  • the whole group went through the props and costumes we needed and made sure we have everything we needed

positive reflections of the shoot day
  • all 4 of our actors were great
- Zaza didn't hold herself back from screaming to fully get into the character of a girl running for her life trying to escape hunters who were after her. She didn't mind getting dirty so that we could get the best shots possible. Throughout the whole day she was super positive and happy for us to keep doing the same shot so that we could the version of the shot that we really liked.
- Mike was great at getting into the character of a hunter who disliked the non-wealthy and treated the girls like animals. Mike was happy to spend a while lying on the floor for a couple of our shots so that we could get the best version of our shots. With the killing of mikes character we had to have him be hit on the head with the weapon. To get the best shot of him getting hit he had to be hit multiple times. Due to being hit multiple time he ended up getting fake blood in his hair. He stayed until we didn't need anymore shots of him before he went to wash the fake blood out of his hair.
- Daisy was great at getting into the character of a hunted girl who was determined in killing the hunters and getting out of the forest alive. Even though  it was cold on the day Daisy didn't complain about being cold and kept in character in all the shots. She was very happy to redo shots so that we could get a shot we were all happy with.
- Stuart was very good at portraying a ruthless hunter. Even though he wasn't in many shots he still acted well in the shots he was in. When the first kill gets killed Stuart kept in the character of him being un-fazed by a girl getting killed in-front of his eyes.

  • we got all of the shots we wanted and more
all of the shots we wanted to film we were able to film. While we were filming we thought about different shots we could do. We did the new shots were thought up and adapted some of our original shots to make them better. We managed to film all the shots before it got dark. I feel that we didn't need to rush and were able to spend time getting the perfect shot so that our opening sequence can look its best.
  • the crew remained positive
- even though it was cold the crew remained positive and instead on complaining about it being cold just carried on filming so that we could get the right shots that we need to make our opening sequence that best it can be.
- The jobs/ roles on set could get very tiring, especially the camera (it is heavy and can be tiring when having to hold it for hand held shots). The crew didn't complain about their arms aching or being tired. We kept on filming and pursuing through the tiredness so we could film for longer and finish filming our shots before it started to get dark.
  • the crew performed well

the crew throughout the day stuck to the same role apart from some times where we all did a little bit of everything. keeping to the same job we were able to get good at it. Being good at our role allowed us to get really got shots. All of the crew did very well with their roles and performed very well so we were able to get really good shots

  • the weather was good
it didn't rain and remained the same lighting throughout the day. Not having to stop due to it starting to rain allowed us to not waste anytime and we were able to spend more time on shots and perfect them. Having the lighting in the forest stay relatively the same brightness mad the shots not look totally different and end up making the edited sequence look bad.
  • the signs worked
the signs that we put up in the forest to stop people from coming into the bit of the forest where we were filming worked as no-one came in the area which would have ruined the shots and mad us waste time and maybe not getting to film all the shots we wanted. The signs also saying we were filming and for people not to be worried about what they see and hear worked as we didn't have anyone call the police on us or people come into the bot on the forest to check on what we were doing. Like i have said before if this happened it would ruin our shots and waste our possible shooting time which means were might not have been able to shoot all the shots we wanted to shoot.

any issue we ran into and what we would have done differently
  • walkers
As we were in a forest we had dog walkers, normal walker and bike riders going around in the forest we were filming in. When there was anyone going past the area in the woods where we were filming we would have to be cautious of not getting the people in shot. Sometimes we would accidentally get them in shot so we would have to reshoot the shot. If I was to do anything differently I would have put signs further away from where we were filming in the forrest so that no-one would come near the area of the forest we were filming in.
  • birds tweeting
In our sequence we want to add gunshots as were couldn't shoot the guns in real life due to the fact that we didn't want to shoot our actors. If gun shots were going off it would scare away birds. In some of the shots the birds were tweeting which ,when we start editing and putting gunshot sounds over, will sound weird and can make the sequence not feel right. To try and fix this when we start editing we will try to edit out/ cover over the sounds of the birds tweeting. In an ideal world it would be good if we could do something to scare away the birds for the shoot day but it is very hard so we can't do something differently to stop the birds tweeting
  • day light
due to us shooting in a forest the light is already slightly dimmer due to the fact that the trees/ leaves block out some of the light coming from the sun. The addition of being in February where the day light hours aren't as long as in summer we had to be quick when filming so we could film all of the shots we wanted to shoot before it started to get dark. If the day light was there for longer we could have done more shots to make the sequence look better. Due to not having lots of time to film we didn't waste any time and did as many shots as possible in the time we were given. If i was to do anything differently I would film in summer where the days are longer and so i would have a longer time period to shoot.
  • types of shots
The camera we had and also the equipment limited us to the types of shots we could shoot. With the equipment and camera we had we couldn't film any birds eye shots that we could use for some establishing shots or maybe for one of the shots of the characters being killed. Also due to the surface of the ground we couldn't have a track to do tracking shots. Instead of the tracking shots using a track we made them handheld tracks. If i was to do anything differently I would have tried to get the right ground in the forest to put a track so we could get a tracking shot as well as have either a drone or a filming crane so that we could get bird's eye view shots.

learnt technical skills and language
we didn't learn any new technical language or skills while shooting on the shoot day

skills learnt from the camera workshops that we used on the day
  1. bubbling the camera to make sure the shots are not at an angle
  2. calls used for filming (stand by, standing by, roll camera, camera rolling, action, cut)
  3. zoom all the way in then focus then zoom out to your desired zoom level (shot)
  4. how to set up the tripod and camera as well as how to strike the kit
  5. we used the "yours" and "mine" calls when we were giving the equipment (mostly the camera) to each other
  6. we made sure the white balance was right for the type of lighting we were in
equipment we used
  1. Black Magic 4K mini URSA camera
  2. 2 different types of lenses (50mm lens 30mm lens)
  3. tripod
  4. portable light box
  5. directional microphone
  6. 2 batteries
my favourite part of the day

my favourite part of the day was when we filmed the shot of Zaza getting killed. I loved using the fake blood as it looked really cool on camera. Zaza acted very well which made the shot look even better. When editing the sequence this shot will look really cool and will make the sequence really good. Even though we only had one chance to do the shoot it went perfectly when we did it.

I am very happy with the footage we got. We managed to get all the shots we intended on filming when planning the shoot and we also managed to get even more shots. The types of shots we used made the action look really good and hopefully when we start editing the shots will make the sequence really gripping and people will want to see a whole film (even though there isn't one). The lighting we used on Daisy, for the shots where she was killing the hunter, made the shot look amazing.

what have i learnt for my next filming project
  • new shots

When were were doing the shots of the hunter being killed by the girls and we were trying to make the shot of the girls hitting the hunter in the head with the gun we didn't know how to make the shot until our technician taught us that we could reverse a shot so we could do a reverse of the girl hitting the camera and when we edit the footage we can just reverse it.

  • time in limited
Due to day light hours not being long and us shooting in a forest we had to be cautious about how much time we had to film. We had to be fast filming the shots. I have learnt not to waste time so that we can use all of the time we have possible to shoot the shots so we are able to shoot all the shots we wanted to shoot.
  • have everything ready some time before
we had some very close calls when getting props and costumes for the shoots. some of the props were only made/ got the day/ night before. What i have learning is that you should try to get props and costumes at least a week before the shoot so you are not panicking trying to get costumes and props.

things i would have done if i did it again
  • pick a different season

The season we filmed in was at the start of Spring (early March) which meant it was cold and the day light hours weren't that long. If i was too do it again i would want to film in summer where it is warmer, the weather is better and the day light hours are longer meaning we could film more shots. Due to the warmer weather the actors and crew would have a better time as they wouldn't be cold.

  • have a quick lunch
The lunch period we had in the middle of the shooting meant that we lost valuable time that we could have used to film. If i was to do that shoot again i would bring food to the place where we were filming so we could quickly have lunch and wouldn't waste as much time as we did on our shoot day. More time means more shots being able to be shot.
  • bring more equipment
the equipment we brought was quick simple but stilled allowed us to films lots of shots. But if we brought some other equipment we would have been able to film other/ cooler shots that would have made the sequence look really good. If i was to do the shoot day again i would want to bring a track and a filming crane so we could get tracking shots as well as birds eye shots which would really improve the sequence.
  • more actors

We had to use Zaza as 2 characters (the girls who gets killed at the start of the sequence and a girl who distracts the hunter so Daisy can kill him). If we had more actors we could use them to run though the back ground of the shots to make it look like the hunting is large scale. If i was to do the shoot again i would get more actors so we could get a better atmosphere for our sequence.

  • make hunters clothing bloody
The hunters costume was very clean which is weird due to them killing lots of girls and taking their dog tags off of them. To make the hunters look like they have been hunting people their costumes should be dirty/ bloody to show that. If i was to do the shoot again i would make sure their suits are bloody/ dirty to make the hunters look like this isn't the first girl they have killed.
  • make the fake knife look more real
the fake knife was all one colour and look very fake. The knife looking fake can make the sequence look bad and can end up ruining the whole sequence. If i was to do the shoot again i would get a fake knife that looks more realistic.
  • have the dog tags have blood on them
the dog tags that the hunter ,who didn't kill, was holding were very clean which look weird as they should have been taken off girls who have died and had lots of blood on them. The dogs tags should at least be dirty. If i was to do the sequence again i would make the dog tags dirty/ bloody to make the dogs tags look more realistic.

what am i most excited about for when we start editing
  • seeing the shots we filmed
  • being able to see the shots edited into a sequence
what challenges will i face when editing the edit suit
  • limited time
The only time that we will have to edit will be in lesson time when we go up to the edit suit. The other time that we will have a chance to go to the edit suit is whenever we have a free bit of time and the edit suit isn't already booked. This means that I wont't have a lot of time to edit our opening sequence.
  • remembering the storyline
Due to us changing shots and adding more shots as well as taking some out the shots do not follow the shots we have written shown in the storyboard. Due to this it will be hard to remember where the shots will need to go. the storyboard will kind of help as the shots are not massively different to the types of shots that we have written down on the storyboard.
  • which of the shots to use

We shot lots of shots (including multiple takes of footage on the same shot. When we start editing it might be quick different to pick which take of the footage of the different shots i will use. the shots have very minor differences to them but i need to pick the best of the shots so i will probably have to spend lots of time looking for the best of each shot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step by Step of the day
  • arrived at the classroom and got all of our stuff (costume and props) that we needed for the shoot day
  • Zaza arrived and we got her to put her costume on and then we did her make-up
  • daisy arrived and we got her to put her costume on and then we did her make-up
  • we got the camera, microphone, lenses, portable light, batteries, etc from the studio
  • we loaded our costumes, props and other equipment into a mini bus
  • we drove to the location (5-10 min drive)
  • we unloaded our costumes, props and other equipment inside in the house next to our location (Peaslake boarding house)
  • Stuart who was already at location and mike who drove us got into their costumes
  • we went round the area that we were filming in the forest and put up the warning signs
  • we then got our actors to the location that we were filming in and took the equipment needed
  • we filmed Zaza's and Stuart's scenes
  • we had lunch break
  • We filmed the rest of Mike's and also Daisy's scenes
  • When it started getting dark and we were finished filming we pack up the equipment and took it back to the house next to the location
  • we then loaded our costumes, props and other equipment into a mini bus again
  • after that we drove back to school where we unloaded the mini bus and but the equipment back where they are supposed to be
  • we put the costumes and props back in the classroom
  • after that we were finished with our shooting day
