How does the mise-en-scene and camera angle/composition within the poster communicate concepts and connotations to the audience?
The poster is of the movie doctor strange which is a movie released in 2016 about a doctor who after having an accident, causing major injury to his hands, joins the life of being sorcerer supreme.
In this poster there is only one character and that is Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Steven Strange). Having only him in the poster puts the focal point on him showing the “audience” who we will be following throughout the movie. Having only one person in the poster stops the audience from being distracted by anything/ anyone else and puts a focus on Dr Strange so we can look at him and admire him. As he is a superhero seeing only him and all of him allows audiences to look up to him and admire him.
The costume helps to identify the genre of the film. By the costume it can be implied that it will be a sci-fi film. The colours of the costume also aid the audience with understanding which side Dr Strange is on.
The blue tunic can represent that power and intelligence that he has as well as the red from the cloak showing his energy and passion he holds. These colours do make the audience create different feelings and emotions even unconsciously
The props can also represent. The green coming from the necklace (the eye of agamotto) which contains the time stone represents the balance that is brought from using the power of the time stone. There is a slight glow of green coming from the stone inside the necklace. The glow draws attention to the necklace. Having the draw of attention to the necklace suggest that it will have some sort of importance in the movie.
The positioning of Dr Strange in the poster can show his importance. Him being in the middle of the poster shows how he is the centre of the plot and that the movie revolves around him/ his life. It helps to show the audience who we will be following throughout the movie. The position he is in shows seriousness which indicates to the audience that he is a serious character and not like one of the funny/ jokester characters like Deadpool. His stance also indicates authority suggesting he will have at least some authority inside the movie.
The set of the movie looks to be a city (New York City). It can be suggested that the movie will be based in the city and ,we as an audience, will see lots of the city. The set being unattainable in the real world gives the idea that in the movie things won't be normal and things will be mystical.
The centre of the poster seems to be the brightest and as it moves out it seems to get darker. This lighting can show how Dr Strange is the main character. He is like the sun; everything needs him to ‘survive’ (there wouldn’t be a movie without him). Only having him in the poster also shows the point of him being the most important person in the movie and how there wouldn’t be a movie without him. Having it be brighter at the centre also brings our attention in the middle and makes us focus on Dr Strange.
Dr Strange’s facial expression in the poster is one of seriousness. It can be suggested that in this movie at least Dr Strange, but maybe more people, will be serious lacking the comedic value. The movie, from Dr Strange’s facial expression, might lack some of the comedic effect that is in some other marvel movies like Deadpool.
The poster is of a long shot. This shot helps us to see all his costume which allows us to see the colours which represent different feelings and emotions. The shot also shows his status that he holds. Long shots are used to show the full costume of the character and shows their body language. From the long shot we see his body language which shows confidence and power suggesting that he is a very confident and powerful man. We might see these traits while watching the movie.
If the poster was to have a grid placed on it then you would be able to see the symmetry inside the poster. This symmetry can suggest that balance that Dr Strange can cause with what he does as sorcerer supreme. Symmetry suggests balance and order. The audience can expect from the symmetry to see order and balance created in this movie. This symmetry could also be symmetry contrapuntal. The contrapuntal symmetry idea could suggest that there won’t actually be order and balance inside this movie and it will instead be chaotic and unbalanced.
Having there be no element of the male gaze can suggest 2 things. One the movie will have no male gaze in it suggesting it is more serious and objectifying women will ruin the storyline. Two the movie is for both women and men and it doesn’t want to conform to the stereotypes. Having no male gaze in the poster suggests to the audience that there won’t be elements of the male gaze in the movie. This idea could potentially attract more women to watch the movie.
