The film I am going to talk about is called free guy which is an action, comedy and sci-fi film starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodi comer and Taika Waititi, written by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn. It was directed by Shawn Levy and released in 2021. The movie is about an NPC in a popular game who suddenly comes to the realisation of his “status”/ ”role”.
I liked this movie as in a way I feel I could relate to this movie. NPCs are people in the background of games where the gamers are the focus. In real life I feel as if the gamers are similar to the popular/ extroverted people and the NPCs are similar to the unpopular/ introverted people. I felt like I could relate to this movie as I would class myself as an introverted/ unpopular person who, like the NPCs, are in the background and in the shadows of the more extroverted/ popular people. Going into the cinema, where I watched the movie, I was feeling apprehensive about school coming up in the next couple of weeks. Watching the movie took me into a place where I could forget about all my worries and enjoy one of my favourite actors, Ryan Reynolds, perform to aid my happiness and extinguish my negative thoughts and feelings. I was watching the movie with my best friend who has lots of the same interests and favourite films as me. Sharing the amazing feeling and atmosphere created by watching Ryan on the big screen was a good feeling as my best friend helped to boost my mood even more. Having him there and watching it on a big screen, with a big bag of popcorn, I think made the movie even more interesting and impactful on me. The soundtrack to the movie as I can remember was a positive soundtrack which unlike some movies, that send out positive and negative energy, only sent out a positive energy into the cinema and the viewers minds. Having the movie be based in a video game similar to one called Grand Theft Auto (GTA). GTA which is a game I play often allows me to be away from the real world for a long time and just be happy. Having this movie be like if GTA was a movie allowed me to experience the same feeling I have when playing GTA. I felt that the message that the movie was trying to get across was that even if you are an unpopular person/NPC you can still become a popular person/gamer. The technical parts of the movie like the props, lighting, sound effects, costumes and lighting were very good in the movie. The lighting and costumes made the scenes look like they were filmed inside a game like GTA. As I have explained above the use of the movie looking like GTA brings the same positive energy from gaming. The sound effects added more to the movie and made it seem more alive, some of them bringing comedic effect to the scenes.
