The hunt
- it is a movie
- released in 2020
- it is rated as a 15
- it is an action horror thriller
- director is Craig Zobel
- the studio is Universal Pictures
The main character of the film is a woman called crystal, She is a woman who was picked by a crazy bunch of rich people who hate the poor and want to kill them. It also started when a chain of texts got leaked that they were planning on hunting a group of poor people for sport.
We find out to the end of the film that the leader of the hunt ,who had picked crystal and wanted to kill her, had captured the wrong crystal. This relates to my groups opening sequence as the hunters had picked the wrong girl to try and hunt. In our narrative the picking of the wrong person wasn't like in the movie with the evil woman getting two people mixed up. In our opening sequence instead of picking a girl it would be easy to hunt they accidentally picked a girl who was capable of taking down and killing the hunters.
Nearer to the end of the film and in in little bit throughout the film we see how crystal is a very capable woman and can survive on her own. She is also a good fighter as she can take down all the hunters by herself. In our opening scene we see how the main character (girl 2) is capable of surviving on her own and is a great fighter. She is able to take down someone twice her size who has a gun.
The narrative of the hunt is a group of rich people hunting poorer people for sport. In the narrative of our opening sequence it is about people/ a person being hunted by hunters for sport. In the whole narrative of our opening sequence we wrote that the rich/ posh hunters find poorer women and bring them to their manor house to hunt them.
both in the movie and in our opening sequence's whole narrative, the idea of a manor house is involved. In the hunt it was said that the poor people would get brought to a manor house and be hunted by the hunters at that said manor. In our opening sequence's whole narrative it is said that the hunters bring the girls to a manor then hunt them in the manor forrest.
In the narrative of the hunt by the end of the movie the woman (the main character) is the only "prey" left. In the narrative of our opening sequence the girl (the main character/ girl 2) is the only "prey" left.
The location of the hunt is started off in a forest and then moves off into other location like a train track, petrol/ gas station and a house. In our opening sequence the location of it is set in a forest. Both of the media products are based, at least at some point, in a forest.
The theme of both the film and our opening sequence is the weaker overpowering the stronger and showing their true potential. This is shown by the "prey" ,who are the weaker ones, ending up killing the hunters ,who are the stronger ones.
In both the film and in our opening sequence guns are used. The prop of a gun is used in both of these media products. The guns are used in both as they help to show the fact that the people are being hunted. The use of the guns being the types of guns used for hunting helps to add to the fact that they are being hunted for sport.
The lighting at the start on the movie ,when they are in the forest, is of daylight/ the type of lighting in a forest when it is day. In our opening sequence we want it to have the lighting of a forest in the day.
The costumes of the "prey" in the movie are civillian clothing whereas in our opening sequence we want to have the "prey" dressed in jumpsuits. This clothing choice we have made it to make it easier for the hunters to identify the "prey" as well as make them un-unique. They are nothing to the hunters, like objects.
I think this would be a good camera angle to use in our opening sequence when the hunters kill the first girl as it can show the emotions of both characters at the moment of one of them being killed.
I think the camera movement of the pan and slight track can be used in our opening sequence as in the movie it shows the sudden appearance of the character. We can use this in our opening sequence for girl 2 for when she appears to kill the hunter. It can be used to show the surprise attack on the hunter.
In our opening sequence we want it to be a flash forward in the movie. We would like the opening sequence to be based at the end of the film. An example of this would be in Reservoir Dogs. In the movie flashbacks are used to show backstory of how the hunt came about. In the scene where Crystal meets the evil lady a flash forward is used to show how she and the other "prey" where selected.
Squid game
- It is a tv show
- released in 2021
- it is rated as a 15
- it is a action drama mystery
- it is directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk
- the studio is Gulliver Studios
The main character of the TV show is a man called Seong Gi-hun who is a poor man put entered into a game to win a big amount of prize money. The game turns out to be a game to the death where the players have to win challenges or they are killed.
In the TV show the main character is poor man who is being killed for a game/ sport. The rich founders of the game are killing the poorer player like it is a silly little game. In our opening sequence the rich hunters are hunting the poorer "prey"/ girls for sport, like it is just hunting animals.
The main character throughout the TV starts showing his true potential. He starts by being a nobody and ends up winning the squid game. He shows his true potential as a winner. In our opening sequence the girl (girl 2) shows her real potential as a girl who can survive on her own as well as take down people twice her size who have guns. The girl ends up with her surviving the hunt like the man in the squid game ended up surviving the squid game.
The narrative of the squid game is that rich people have created a game to hunt down poor people to put them into a game so that they can observe them as they get killed by the hands of the rich people. In our opening sequence the narrative is that rich hunters have lured poor girls to their manor house where they are then brought to the manor forest and hunted and killer by the rich hunters.
In the narrative of the squid game by the end of the movie the man (the main character) is the only player left. In the narrative of our opening sequence the girl (the main character/ girl 2) is the only "prey" left. The idea of the main character being the only person of their kind is shown in both media products.
The location of both media products (the squid game and our opening sequence) are both isolated locations. In the squid game the squid game is located on a private island where no-one will know or hear what is happening. In our opening sequence the scene is located in an isolated forest which is owned by the hunters so no-one will see or hear what is happening.
The theme of both the Tv show and our opening sequence is the weaker overpowering the stronger and showing their true potential. This is shown by the "prey"/ players ,who are the weaker ones, ending up killing the hunters ,who are the stronger ones.
In squid game guns are used to show power of the different people in the squid game. The guns are used to control the players and kill them if they mess up/ lose a game. In our opening sequence guns will be used to shower the power the hunters have over the "prey"/ girls and when the girl (girl 2) ends up taking the gun it shows the shift in power in the narrative.
In Squid game the lighting is very bright. This can be implied that the lighting is used to oppose the situation that is going on. what is happening in the squid game is very dark and sinister whereas the bright lighting connotes happiness ands peace. This is because the colour white can connote peace, purity and happiness. In our opening sequence the lighting that we will have will be daylight but slightly dimmer and darker. This adheres to the ideas/ events that are happening in our sequence. The dark and dim lighting matches the dark events that are happening (hunters killing girls for sport).

The costumes in Squid Game are green jumpsuits will numbers written on them. This is the same kind of costume that we are using in our opening sequence. In our opening sequence will will have the girls wearing orange jumpsuits that will have spray-painted numbers on them. The number is used to take away the uniqueness from the player and the girls in both media products. The taking away of their uniquenesses suggest how the creators of the game/ hunt do not care about the players/ girls. The jumpsuits used in both media products can be used to separate the player/ girls from the hunters/ creators of the game.
I think the low angle used in Squid game is a good camera angle and an angle that we could use in our opening sequence. The lower angle helps to connote the power of the person. if we use the low angle when the girl is killing the hunter it can connote the power she now has and how the power has shifted. This is if we use a lower angle when the hunters are killing the first girl.
the camera movement of the camera tracking back a little bit then raising up and tilting to show an establishing shot will be used in our opening sequence to establish the location in which the our opening sequence is set.
In Squid game it is a linear narrative with the occasional flash back. In our opening sequence it will be a flash forward (the opening sequence will be to the end of the narrative of the film). The flash forward will be in linear narrative like Squid Game.
Ready or not
- it is a movie
- released in 2019
- it is rated as an 18
- it is a action comedy horror
- directors are Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet
- the studio is 20th century fox
The main character of the film is called Grace. She is the bride of a man in a rich family. This rich family every time someone gets married play a game with the new member of the family. These games are children's games. if they lose the game they are not accepted into the family. The game that Grace picks out is hide and seek. It turns out instead of normal hide and seek it is the family trying to find and kill grace and if she survives the night she is welcomed into the family.
At the start of the movie Grace can be seen as weak as she is new to the family and a little bit timid. She doesn't have the confidence that the rest of the family have as she hasn't been with the family as long as everyone else. By the end of the movie when she has killed the whole family she is powerful and has power over the family (even though they are all dead). in our opening sequence the girls starts by being weak (the "prey") and ends with having power over the hunter (killing him).
The narrative of ready or not is of a poorer girl going to a rich persons family manor and ending up being hunted by the rich inhabitants of the manor. In our opening sequence girls are being invited to a rich family's manor then ending up getting hunted by the rich hunters in a forest.
In both ready or not and our opening sequence a kind of game is involved. In ready or not the family and Grace are playing hide and seek. This hide and seek game is very dark and ruthless. In our opening sequence the "game" of hunting is being explored. Instead of the hunters hunting animals they are hunting the girls. Both games are much darker versions of that said game.
The location that ready or not is set in is a rich families' manor house where the main character is being hunted by a rich family for a game. In our opening sequence the location that it is let in is in the forest of a rich families' manor house where she is being hunted for sport.
the theme of both the movie and our opening sequence is of a sick game being played. In ready or not a very dark version of hide and seek is player with one hider and the rest being seekers. When the hider is found they will be killed. In our opening sequence a very dark version of hunting game is done. Instead of hunting animals the hunters are hunting humans and collecting the most dog tags to win a prize.
the theme of the main character showing their true potential is shown in both the movie and our opening sequence. In the movie grace shows her true potential which is being able to kill all the family when all of them were after her. In our opening sequence the main character (girl 2) shows her true potential which is being able to kill someone double the size of her and holding a gun (hunter 1)
In both the film and in our opening sequence guns are used. The prop of a gun is used in both of these media products. The guns are used in both as they help to show the fact that the people are being hunted. The use of the guns being the types of guns used for hunting, when use in our opening sequence, helps to add to the fact that they are being hunted for sport. The ruthless types of weapons used to try and kill grace in the movie shows how ruthless the hunters are.
the costumes of the main characters in both media products a very different. In the movie the main character is wearing a wedding dress. wedding dresses individualise people. On a females wedding day they are basically the centre of attention. putting Grace in a wedding makes her an individual. whereas in our opening sequence the girls having their costume be jumpsuits takes away their individuality.
the lighting in both media products are opposites. In our opening sequence it is light/ day and in the movie it is drak/ night. The light in our opening sequence opposes what is going on in the scene. In the scene there is is lots of dark tones. The light which connotes peace, purity and being good used in the sequence is a good use to oppose for the scene. In the movie the dark lighting is used to adhear to the dark tones that are happening in the movie.
I think this is a good camera angle used as it shows the emotion of the victim as he is being killed but also shows Grace's hands (how he is being killed). I think this will be a good camera to use in our opening sequence so that we can show girl 2's face as she is being killed but also show the hunter's hands and arms when killing her.
the use of the camera movement of the pan combined with the cut as the crossbow bolt flies across the scene is used effectively. The cut allows for practical effects to be added. The cut but then keeping the pan height and speed the same made the cute between shots smooth and look like there was no cut. We could use this trick in our opening sequence when any changes from real prop to fake props are being used.
battle royale
- it is a movie
- released in 2000
- it is rated as an 18
- it is an action adventure drama
- director is Kinji Fukasaku
- the studio is Battle Royale Production Committee
The main character/ characters of the film are called Shuya and his friend Noriko as well as a transfer student called Shogo. They have been taken to an abandoned island where they are fitted with metal collars and are forced to kill each other until there is only one person standing. This is a government game that is held every year and is super ruthless. The collars can be remotely triggered and causes it to explode and kill the wearer of the collar

In the movie both of the main characters as well as the transfer student are all students. Being a student you don't normally have a job and if you do you aren't earning much money. The government are rich and have lots of money. Keeping that in mind the government are watching as the students are being hunted. It is like the rich are hunting the poor as the government have started the hunt and made the students finish it. In our opening sequence the poor girl/ girls are being hunted by the rich hunters. In both the movie and our opening sequence the poor are being hunted by the rich

in the movie we see how the students especially the main characters are able to take care of themselves and survive in the wild. we see how Shuga takes acre of Noriko's wound when she gets hurt. It shows how he is capable and able to survive without the need for medical attention. In our opening sequence the girl shows she is capable of surviving on her own when she kills the hunter (hunter 1) when he is twice the size of her and has a gun. In both the movie and our opening sequence the main characters show their capability
The narrative of both the movie and our opening sequence are the rich hunting the poor. In the movie the rich government have put the poorer students on a abandoned island and made them hunt each other as they watch like it is a game. in our opening sequence the rich hunters are hunting the poorer girls like it is a casual hunt but instead of the animals being hunted it is humans.
The narrative of both the opening sequence and the movie are the poorer/ weaker being exploited by the richer/ stronger. IN the movie the rich strong government has put the poor weak students on a isolated island and made them fight to the death all for the entertainment to the government. In our opening sequence the rich stronger hunters are bringing girls to the manor house to hunt them (the poor weak girls) in the forest.
The location of both the movie and our opening sequence is an isolated/ remote place. In the movie the location is an isolated island where no-one apart from the government will know and hear what is happening on the island. In our opening sequence the location is an isolated manor forest where if the girls scream no-one will hear them. No-one will know what the hunters are doing to the girls.
The theme of both our opening sequence as well as the movie is the main character proving their true potential. In our opening sequence the girl shows her true potential when she ends up killing the hunter (hunter 1) when he is twice the size of her and is carrying a shotgun. In the movie the main characters show their true potential when they end up surviving till the end of the game and then escape back to the main land.
in both our opening sequence and the movie the props of guns are used to show the power that the characters ,who hold them, have. In our opening sequence the hunters have the power over the girls but when the girl (girl 2) has the gun it shows the shift of power from the hunters to now the girl having the power over the girl. In the movie the government all have guns and overall are the most powerful people in the movie. The students who have guns who end up killing lots of people have the most power as they can easily kill everyone.
The costume in both our opening sequence and the movie can connote the higher powers being ruthless and treat the weaker like objects/ dehumanising them. In our opening sequence the girls are all dressed in orange jumpsuits. This costumes can connote they are like prisoners in the fact that they are trapped and can't escape. This also takes aways the girls' individuality and dehumanises them. The hunters are hunting the girls like animals so are treating the girls like them and the costumes emphasise this point. in the movie the costume of the shoot uniform is used. School uniform makes everyone look identical and takes away peoples' individuality. Using this costume can show how the government don't care about anyone of the students and just wants them to hunt each other for entertainment.

I like the camera movement and shot used. The shot and movement is the camera zooming to a close up shot of the collar. This makes the audience focus on the collar and shows how it is important to the narrative and gives it lots of significance. In our opening sequence we can use this shot on one of the weapons or something significant that we want the audience to focus on.
The editing technique to cutting to different shots of the action that is happening helps for the audience to see what is happening and focuses our attention to things that the movie maker wants us to focus on. We will use this editing technique in our opening sequence when we edit it is make the sequence look better as well as get the audience to focus on things we want them to focus on.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
what the movies and TV show have in common:
- all of the media products go over/ follow the theme of the rich hunting/ killing the poor
- all of the media products involve a "game"
- all of the locations of the media products are isolated locations
- in all of the media products the main characters show their true potentials
- in all the media products the main character switches from the weak to the most powerful character
- all of the media products have guns in them
what impact do the conventions have on the film / what do the conventions add to the genre
- the use of the theme of it being a sick/ twisted game makes the narrative seem that more interesting and engaging to the audience ( especially the target audience)
- the fast pace shots help keep the attention of the audience and make it more thrilling and a heart racing atmosphere
why do the conventions appeal to your target audience
- our target audience who we have picked as being 15+ year old males and females like the conventions are it very appealing to both genders and liked by lots of ages
- the swear words used in some of the media products make it not suitable for ages under 15 years old
- the dark narrative is appealing to older teenagers as following a dark narrative can be very easy as dark narratives are very gripping
what elements are different
- in the hunt and battle royale the "prey"/ students are given weapons whereas in our opening sequence the main characters have to deal with no weapons or end up making/ getting weapons
- In our opening sequence and the hunt they are shot in the forest. however, in the rest they are shot in other isolated locations
- in the hunt, battle royale and ready or not the characters have their own clothing but in the other media products the main characters are given costumes
- in ready or not, our media products and the hunt the main characters are females where as in the other media products the main characters are either multiple characters who aren't all the same gender or male
how do the other media products inspire our opening sequence
- the editing techniques that i have picked out on this post we can use when editing our opening sequence
- the camera angles and movements i have picked out on this post we can use when we film our opening sequence
