whole storyboard

Each of the group made storyboard slides for our opening title sequence

We split up the step by step outline to allow each person to do part of the storyline and when they are put together the whole storyline will be there

  • Shot opens with a girl struggling, hysterically crawling on the floor trying to get away from two men standing behind her (camera at floor level with the girl so their faces aren't shown)
  • The girl then gets her throat cut, drops to the ground, revealing two men standing behind her.
  • One man drops down to examine her and takes an object from her, either a dog tag or some sort of object that identifies the girl and expresses the magnitude of this hunt.
  • The man puts the object in his pocket, clearing a 'trophy' of some sort that he is collecting to delude idea that she is merely another *kill'.
  • The two men have a brief conversation regarding one more girl being left to kill, "one more to go". Perhaps they tally up their kill counts, laughing about it?
  • They decide to separate, turning the last kill into a competition on who can kill her first
  • Scene switches to shots of the last girl' as she proves her survival skills; bandaging her wounds with ripped material from her clothes and preparing her own weapon (sharpened stick/ socks filled with rocks)
  • Tension builds as the audiences focus swaps between the man who is looking for her, hearing movement and appealingly getting closer to the girl, which builds audiences suspicion
  • Scene swaps to 'abstract' shots of the protagonist who appears to be 'struggling' which confuses audience's predictions on who will 'win"
  • Shots increase in pace as tension is built as the chase develops.
  • The girl catches up the hunter and attacks him by jumping on his back as they struggle fighting
  • After some struggle, she pushes him to the floor, whacking him over the head with her man made weapon and kills him.
  • She then collects the dog tags from his pocket, showing some emotional attachment to the objects as anger rises in her.
  • The girl picks up the hunters gun and proceeds to walk away from the body, still in slight shock and hysteric, clearly wanting revenge which gives audiences hints that she is now looking for the other hunter.
  • The sound track plays as she walks towards camera and its zooms out, revealing more of the location.

the order of the slides goes

1. Bea

2. Cole

3. Daisy

4. me

Making of my section of the story board

My group split up our step by step outline and we each did a part of the storyboard (around 4 bullet points) and made storyboard slides for them

I am doing the last 4 bullet points of the step by step outline
it includes:
  • fight scene after first hit with weapon from behind
  • knocking the hunter to the floor
  • the girl repeatedly whacking the hunter with the weapon (don't see weapon/ body, shot looking up at her face)
  • picks up dog tags
  • grabs gun and walks off
these are the plans for my slides of the storyboard

I planned out the shot that where going to be in the part of the scene that I was making the storyboard of

I used this plan to help me with the real storyboard that i tried to draw better and clearer on what was happening in that shot

While doing the storyboard plan I talked to my group and why decided to add 3 extra shots in between the 4th and 5th shot of the shots I was doing

These are the pictures/ shots that I drew for my part of the storyboard
The order of the pictures of the shot goes down and then left to the right

what is story boarding

why is it important?

- before filming

- after filming

who's it important for ?

before filming is most important

Before filming

  • helps you to plan out your camera work
  • visual plan
  • helps to communicate and organise a crew around the directors vision
  • consider mise-en-scene choices
  • spend far more time planning then on set , organised and take full advantage of production
  • make sure the story flows through editing

After filming
  • editing guide post-production

what is on a story board
  1. shot number
  2. location
  3. action
  4. shot/ movement
  5. sound
  6. lighting
  7. transitions
  8. timing
- remember framing and composition (foreground, background, rule of thirds, etc)

- take into account the 180 degree rule

- think about if the shot will work when edited together

- story board is 30-40 shots for the opening scene

these are examples of storyboards

this is a video explaining what storyboards are and how to make them

new outline for opening scene

This is the step by step outline that we made as a group

This is based off the review we received and made after making our test shoot for our opening scene

OUTLINE

  • Shot opens with a girl struggling, hysterically crawling on the floor trying to get away from two men standing behind her (camera at floor level with the girl so their faces aren't shown)
  • The girl then gets her throat cut, drops to the ground, revealing two men standing behind her.

  • The sound track plays as she walks towards camera and its zooms out, revealing more of the location.
This is the note of which points each of the group is doing for the storyboarding in colour so its easier to see who has what parts

we adjusted some of the points a bit so that some of the shot that each of us were doing didn't clash

  • grabs gun and walks off

review of our test shoot

This is my groups opening scene that I will reviewing

My group talked together and made notes about what we thought of the opening scene

I think that the test shoot went well and looks good. I think that we all put in lots of effort and it is very good for the first shoot of our idea of opening scene

We didn't think that the plot of the scene was that clear. We thought that the camera work could have been better used to present the plot clearer. Camera angles, movements and composition if used effectively can be used to clearly show a plot well. The costumes of the hunters and the girls didn't show the roles that they were playing effectively so didn't show the plot of the girl being the hunted who then ends up kill the hunter. It looks more like a girl killing a man who has a gun. The lack of props made it quite hard to actually show what was happening in the scene which in turn didn't make the plot that clear.

We thought that some of the things we did worked well. The location of where we filmed, a wooded area of the school, was good as in the real opening scene we want to shoot it in a forest. The location being in the wooded area helps us visualise what the location of out scene will look like and if any challenges arose in the woods then when we shot the real scene we could do things differently to combat them. Another thing that worked well was that we were able to show a rough outline of what will happen in the scene and we could see if the scene worked well and looked right.

We talked about if we thought the scene was engaging and if so why we thought it was engaging. The kills that happen in the scene at the start and end of the scene makes the scene engaging. having a kill at the start of the scene is straight action which is very engaging for an audience and makes them want to see more.

We talked about if we thought we were able to create tension in the scene. We believe that we should have used different camera shots and compositions to create more tension in the scene. We think that we were lacking tension in the scene.

We talked about what we think we should change to improve the scene. We think that we need to change the camera angles, compositions and movements to make the scene more engaging and build more tension in the scene. When we have the actual costumes for the actors/ characters the plot will will be clearer and the scene will make more sense. The make-up/ practical effect that we will apply to the actors will make the scene more engage and overall make the plot clearer and better. The props need to be added and look like what they are supposed to be. when this happens that plot will be clearer and we can actually see that the men have guns which can make them actually look they are hunters. We need to change the order of the shots. The change can make the scene more suspenseful/ tense as well as make the plot clearer.

The scene only lasts only one minute and twenty second which is too short. The opening scene needs to be a minimum length of two minutes. To combat this we will make shots longer and add more shots to the scene.

Our groups showed out test shoot to our teacher and he gave us some feedback and advice for what we can change/ do when we do our actual shoot for out final opening scene.

Our teacher really enjoyed our opening scene and thought it was a very good concept and was shot well but he did have some things he said could be done to improve it even more

He thought that we could have made the opening part ,of the girl getting her throat slit, longer by adding in a struggle from the girl but then ending still with her throat getting slit. We have added the girl crawling away from the hunters and trying to escape trying to scream but getting her throat slit, ending her misery. Adding this to the scene will make it longer which will combat out lack of length of the whole scene.

Our teacher thought that it was confusing on my the hunters slit up in the first place. He suggested adding to the scene why the hunters split up. Our combat to that is to add a little dialogue where the hunters say that the main character is the last one and whichever of the two hunters kills her wins the hunt. Adding this to the scene will make it longer which will combat out lack of length of the whole scene.

The teacher was saying how if the girl is the main character, we need to see more of the girl than of the hunter who gets killed. We will add more shots of the girl to connote her being the main character as well as adding more length to the scene. Adding this to the scene will make it longer which will combat out lack of length of the whole scene. We will add more shot like showing her preparing to kill the hunter

These preparation shots can be used to suggest that she is not a normal girl. It will suggest her having experience/ practice/ knowledge in a field (e.g. the army, the navy, etc). We will show shots of her bandaging herself which can show that she is experienced and knows what she is doing and isn't nervous in what she has to do. Adding shots of the girl watching the hunter will help bring tension to the scene and make it more gripping and interesting.

The edited test shoot

This is the edited test shoot that our group did

We filmed this opening scene all together and Daisy edited it

planning for our test shoot

We are doing a test shoot so that we can see what the opening scene will look similar to when we film the opening scene for real.

The test shoot is also used so that we can find any problems that we might experience when we film. With these problems we can do things that will help resolve the problems

Roles

- all of our group with be actors in the test shoot but not the real shoot

  • hunter 1 - me (Will)

  • hunter 2 - Cole (replaced by other student)

  • girl who is killed - Daisy

  • main character (girl not killed) - Bea

- camera operator will be Daisy - using Daisy's phone

- editor will be Cole (was later replaced by Daisy)

- director - we are all the directors of the scene

- behind the scenes photo taker - Will

as all of the group are actors we all have to do the roles of the actors

Location

- woods - by Art department - we used the woods as in our real scene we will shoot it in a forest and we were not allowed to go off campus to shoot the test shoot so we had to use the only woods on school grounds

Props

- a knife - we will use a stick -we used a stick as a knife is a weapon so we can't use a real knife and a stick is similar size to a knife

We might switch the weapon to be either a sharpened stick or a sock with rocks in it. These would be more likely to be easily obtained by the girl than a knife

- a gun - we will use an umbrella - we used an umbrella as a gun is a weapon so we can't use a real gun and an umbrella is a similar size and shape to a gun

The shoot

On the day of our shoot day Cole contracted Covid-19 so was not able to be there to help film as well as act

We had to replace Cole so we found a student who was free for an hour and used them for the part of the scene where Cole's character was supposed to be scene

what went well

what I think went well was that we were able to shoot all of the parts of the scene we intended to film although it wasn't long enough

I think the general storyline of the opening scene worked well even though we had never filmed it before

struggles

The struggle of losing Cole for the test shoot due to Covid-19 was quite big as he was going to be our editor as well as one of the actors. To combat that Daisy had to take on the role of the editor in Cole's absence

We also had to find a student that wasn't in class to replace Cole and play one of the hunters

We struggled with the time that we had to film in. Having the lesson only being 1 hour we had to film all of the scene in 1 hour which is a struggle to do if we want our scene to look good

The sounds coming from us as actors and the surroundings aren't that of what the scene should sound like. For example there would be no cars driving around in the hunting forest but in our test shoot there were cars constantly driving past so we had to cut the audio out and the scene didn't sound right

anything that could have been done better

I think we could have added different kinds of shots to make the scene more interesting and gripping to the audience

I think that we could have changed the angle of the camera more to connote different demotions, statuses, etc

developing our idea after feedback

Simple storyline

1. opens with the kill

2. shows hunters

3. hunters split

4. shows girl running in opposite direction to hunters

5. kills one hunter

6. picks up gun and walks off to kill other hunter

Additions to the opening scene

  •  no talking
  • noises from environment
  • no music until after scene ends

Why the main character has a motive for killing the hunters

- during uni the bf truly falls in love with the main character and ends up not wanting to kill in the hunt

- Due to the bf not wanting to kill in the hunt the hunters shoot the bf

- The main character runs over to the bf and rips her dress to bandage the bf

- The main character's bloody dress has her bf's blood on it

This is a presentation that I made of the storyline of the opening scene

I did this presentation by myself using my groups ideas

mood board

This is a mood board I made about my groups ideas. I made this by myself but used the ideas from the whole of my group.

There are 4 areas of the opening scene shown in the mood board:
1. the girl(s)
2. the hunters
3. the wounds
4. the location

The Girl(s)

The spray painted numbers are to represent how each of the girls will have a number spray painted on the back of their clothing.

The bloody dress is for how the main character and also the girl at the start will maybe be wearing a dress which is blood covered

The messy hair is to show how she has been in combat for a long time and it isn't like she just got there after spending lots of time getting her hair styled

The bandaged hand and wrist is to help show the audience that she isn't just some regular girl. She knows what she is doing and knows how to properly care for a wound

The jumpsuit is another of the possible costume choices for the girls. The girls could either be in dresses or jumpsuits. It depends on our ongoing decision

The dog tags are shown as in the opening scene dog tags will be used to show how many of the girls the hunters have killed. Each of the girls have a dog tag. When a girl is killed the hunter will take their dog tag

The hunters

The guns are shown to show the kinds of weapons that hunters will be using to kill the girls

The high visibility orange clothing is used to show one of the possible clothing choices for what the hunters will be wearing. The orange high visibility clothing shows that they are hunters but doesn't suggest that they could be military

The tweed clothing is another one of my groups possible clothing choices for what the hunters will be wearing. The tweed outfit can suggest that the hunters are posh and are treating the hunting of the girls like a typical hunting event

The wounds

The blood coming from the mouth is shown as we would like to have the opening to have a girl getting her throat slit then throwing up blood/ having blood come out of her mouth

The throat slit is shown as we would like the opening to have a girl getting her throat slit as well as one of the hunters getting his throat slit

The slab wounds are shown as we can apply the wounds to the girls to suggest they have been through combat of some sorts. We can add then so that it doesn't look too simple to be able to kill the hunted girls

These wounds are from gun shots

The singular holes are from a gun that shoots one singular bullet at a time. Examples are a rifle or a handgun

The other gun shot wounds are from a gun that shoots multiple projectiles are once. An example of this would be a shotgun

The location

The forest is shown as this is where the location of our opening scene will be based. So it will be based in a forest. Forests are the types of places where hunts are done so it fits the idea of the hunters hunting the girls like animals

the final sequence

This is my final sequence that I shot and edited. This is the final product from my production process that I have used this blog to documen...
